What is a Marketing Coach and what can they do for your business?
If you have heard the term ‘marketing coach’, you might be wondering what it means and whether you need one in your business.
First, let’s look at what a coach will do for you compared to a mentor, then what a marketing coach or marketing mentor will do for you.
Coach Or Mentor?
A coach will generally ask a business owner what their problem is when it comes to marketing, then try and draw out the answer to the problem from inside the business owner. Through a series of open ended questions, such as what, how, when, why etc they will guide the owner towards an answer.
However, the potential issue is if the owner does not KNOW what he needs to solve his problem if the question is a tactical or strategical marketing one.
A mentor will generally be an expert in one or more area, such as sales, marketing or management, and whilst they will ask questions to ensure that they understand the challenge faced by the owner, they will be able to provide the answer, or the process to follow, to solve the problem, then help the owner to implement that process.
When it comes to marketing, let’s look at how this might work in practice.
Marketing Coach Or Marketing Mentor
Carrying on our example of how a coach works, a marketing coach might specialise in helping business owners with marketing, or even marketing executives with how to perform their job better.
Buy specialising in the marketing niche, they will gain a better understanding of the challenges faced by business owners when it comes to marketing, or marketing executives when it comes to performing their role.
They may solve problems more related to the mindset of the problem in hand, such as overcoming mental obstacles or hurdles, and help the client to find a way to move on from or overcome their current challenge.
A marketing mentor will be asked by a business owner:
• How to improve a certain aspect of their existing marketing, such as how to get better at managing their Google Ads campaign, how to improve their website, how to improve their Google My Business Listing or Search Engine Optimisation; or
• What areas of marketing they are not undertaking that they should be doing and that will provide a good return on investment. The marketing mentor will use his expertise in the area of marketing to advise precisely what the business owner should do next to grow their business.
