How successful business owners start their day matters, a lot!
If you can imagine being a caveman or a cave woman for a moment, living by the sea.
You have no technology, no supermarkets, nothing to do all day except survive, catch food and eat it.
What a simple life.
However, when all you have to do is to catch food for your main daily chore, which is quite important to your Bee Gee needs, also known as ‘staying alive’, when do you think you would set out to go and catch those fish?
Would you wake up, dust off your cave door mat, sit outside and soak up the morning sun, drink some cave puddle water, maybe have a little snooze, then around 5pm in the afternoon set off to try and catch some fish?
Or would you wake up and head out first thing and set out to catch your fish knowing that you could then relax for the remainder of the day because you have provided the food that you and your family need to eat well?
It would be the latter wouldn’t it?
One of my neighbours had a holiday home in Thailand and every day a woman would come onto the beach selling homemade breads or cookies.
He would watch her walk up and down the beach all day until she had sold every last item, then she would disappear and not be seen again until the next day.
My neighbour was intrigued and asked her one day why she didn’t come back to sell more of her breads and cookies.
“I don’t need to”, she replied. “Once I have sold my tray of goods, I know that I have enough money to feed my family, so I go home for the remainder of the day.”
She was happy selling just enough to feed her family and didn’t feel the need to sell anymore.
My neighbour, being a businessman, couldn’t understand why she didn’t want to maximise her income and profits, but she was happy as she was.
The key point was the time of day that she went out to sell her goods; first thing in the morning.
The sooner she got out selling her products, the bigger her chances of selling out of them which provided the income she needed for her family that day.
So, you now have a cavemen and the beach seller in Thailand doing their most important task for the day first thing every, single, day.
Why is it then that so many business owners who ‘claim’ to want more clients and more profits don’t work on the marketing and growth of their business first thing every day?
Why is it that many business owners never work on the growth of their business, yet constantly bemoan the fact that they need more money?
Successful business owners work on the growth of their business first thing in the morning at least three out of their five working days every week, but preferably five days each week.
My advice to all of my consultancy clients and ‘More Clients Academy’ members is to spend at least 30 minutes of every day working on the marketing of their business.
These 30 minutes must take place before any email/social media checking so that the mind is completely clear of ‘anyone else’s call on your time’ and you are refreshed and raring to go.
If you spend 30 minutes every day working on the marketing of your business, that is 2.5 hours per week.
When you multiply that by 46 weeks of the year to allow for holidays, that is 115 hours or based on a 7-hour working day 16.42 days working on the marketing of your business.
Let me ask you a question, if I may?
If you spent 16 days working on the growth of your business, do you think that there is a chance you would get something right and win some more clients?
I know that it will, so I beg you not to check emails or social media first thing every day.
Everything can wait until you have worked on the growth of your business. You know this is true because when you do go on holiday, or go into a meeting first thing in the morning, your business is still there when you return.
Do this every day, work through the training in The More Clients Academy, then, and only then, check other people’s ‘To Do List’ for your time.
Put yourself first every day and your business will grow.
