My path into consultancy..
The song goes “it’s not how you start it’s how you finish.”
I disagree. It’s not even about the finishing, but instead it is all about the taking part in your business on a day to day basis to the maximum of your ability that matters the most.
It is about making your business as good as it can be and doing yourself justice.
My good friend Mike Seddon said in his Last Ever Webinar before he passed that you have to find your reason of why you do what you do and that “doing it for the family” just isn’t enough.
I totally agree with that. Yes, of course I do what I do for my family, but I do it for myself first. It took me a long time to grasp that, and it wasn’t until I left the law and started doing what I do now, that I really enjoy, that I finally got it.
My years as a solicitor were spent first doing it to please my parents and then doing it to pay the bills. I was by no means doing what I loved.
It wasn’t until I left the law and started my marketing consultancy for small business that I realised I finished most days with a smile on my face, as opposed to sheer and utter relief that I was leaving my office when I was working as a solicitor.
That always used to make me laugh, too.
People were utterly amazed that I was giving up a steady, well paid job as a professional to be a marketing consultant.
They thought I was crazy.
I knew that I had to do it for my own sanity or I would have rotted away in my job, much as my dad seemed to with a job that he didn’t love but which he did for 20 odd years with the sole aim of getting a good pension, only to discover on retiring that the company had squandered his money and so he would be lucky to get half of what he was due.
Whilst there may have been a few years at the beginning of struggle (there were indeed) I soon passed my solicitor’s salary and went well beyond what I would have been expected to earn over time, and most importantly I get to do what I enjoy every day.
