If you are serious about blogging, one of the first questions you will want to be able to answer is “What is the ideal blog post length?” With some examples and some background information, I want to answer that question for you now.
My name is Nick Jervis. I am a small business marketing consultant and have been blogging since 2003.If I had not started blogging, and then turning my blog posts into my weekly email marketing newsletter, I would not have a business today.
Blogging brings thousands of people to my websites every month, and many of those buy my books, download my free guides and then at some point in the future, they buy my products such as The More Clients Academy, or ask me to sign up for my PPC Consultancy Services. They also buy products using my affiliate links.
Blogging is vital for any consultant, coach, mentor or expert.
Now that you have some context, let’s dive into the ideal blog post length.
What Is The Ideal Blog Post Length?
The simple answer is that the ideal blog post length primarily is the length that you need to convey all of the answers to your prospects ideal clients, prove your expertise in this area and to persuade them to part with their email address to discover more.
Ultimately, if you are blogging, nearly all of your sales will come from people who are on your email list. So many bloggers do not realise this, or blindly ignore this fact, but I can promise you that this is true.
Think about this for a moment. If someone arrives at your blog post and reads one article from you, then hits the back button and disappears, they are lost to your forever. You had one chance to make the sale to them and you failed. Game over.
However, imagine if that one person arrives at your website, reads your blog, likes the way that you answer the question that they typed into Google and decides to discover more, because you offer a very helpful guide providing even more advice on the topic of your blog.
They download your guide by providing their email address, then they hear from you every week forever more. In some of those emails, they click on your affiliate link and buy a product that you recommend, because by now they know, like and trust you. You have hundreds of people join your email list every day make sales every single month.

So, the first answer to the question is that your ideal blog post length has to be long enough to answer your prospect’s question, prove your expertise and persuade them to part with their email address in exchange for an ‘item of value’ to them.
Ideal Blog Post Length With Examples
In my experience, you can have a successful (meaning at the top of Google) blog with a length from as little as 500 words to as many as 5,000 words.
Here are some of my best performing blog posts so you can see the variety of lengths:
- Best hot tub vacuums. 1,113 Words.
- SEO For Solicitors. 4126 words.
- Underperforming business partner. 1362 words.
You can see that each of them is past 1,000 words, and the most competitive one, SEO for solicitors, is more than 4,000 words long.
If the length scares you, don’t let it. I wrote that article in many different sittings.
One of my sayings is “Perfection kills momentum”, and every business desperately needs momentum. So my advice is to do what I do, start a blog, and then come back to it and grow it when you see it starting to get some traction.
Conclusion “What Is The Ideal Blog Length”.
In summary, the answer is more than 1,000 words but as long as it takes to persuade someone that you really do know what you are talking about them and entice them to discover more.
